Although a distinctly separate massif from the Aberdares, Mt Kenya also forms part of the central highlands. It's Africa's second highest mountain at 5199 metres, and its gleaming and eroded snow-
covered peaks can be seen for the miles until the late morning clouds obscure
the view.
This mountain is so vast that it's not hard to understand why the Kikuyu deified it, why their houses are built with the…

There are many options available when it comes to choosing the perfect African Safari adventure. Variations can include region, duration and the specifics of what you
are hoping to see once you are there. Planning is crucial in order to avoid the
disappointment of spending three weeks watching hippos wallow when actually you
wanted to see lions playing with their cubs!
Kenya is possibly the…

Last night we had the great oppurtunity to do Firewalking, it is the first of many to be held here at the resort. The Areena Family where the first to put themselves to the test and boy was it a test. We where as nervous as hell - those coals where RED HOT AND GLOWING the flash seems to show a different picture here, but believe me it was HOT.…

I got to lead my first quad ride this week, which was rather cool.
It was a short ride a whole 20mins, but still I managed to lose the track and have to make a u-turn on closer inspection of the grass. I know it sounds impossible to get 'lost' on such a short trip, but when the track comes and goes, and you riding throught the bush, it is a little tricky to stay "on track" so to speak. Needless to say you only get lost once and never again, (unless that track disappears)
We did…

Well, what a day we have had here at Areena! It started with small and furry and ends up wet and wild!
There are 2 new additions to our family, in the form of small furry, brown dwarf goats.
Our dwarf goat had twins yesterday and they are the cutest little things ever, about as big as kittens.
There was a bit more tortoise action as well, I get called to one of our units, to remove a…

never a dull day when your office is the perfect short cut for a tortoise, except today it took a left turn instead of a straight heading and ended up at "the back" and a " hey guys anyone notice the tortoise is in the office", rather heavy to lift and turn when you the size of a small rock.

Hi PJ
It's the Evans family. We all got back to the UK
safely and now back at work :-( We just wanted to say a big thank you
and that we really enjoyed our stay at the Riverlodge. It was perfect
for us - clean, tidy and quiet with fantastic service. Once again,
thank you for helping us plan our trip down the garden route - it
really made a difference to our trip to have the benefit of your local
knowledge. In case you have forgotten us already - I attach a…

There are 3000 cumecs of thunder heading for Augrabies Falls. They are gonna go off. If ever you wanted to be impressed by a waterfall, now is the time. Should get here on Sunday and looking at the charts, should run like that for at least two more.
Augrabies translates as "Place of Great Noise". Seeing it at this level, you do get the full affect.
Enjoy

Had lunch today under the Jamiesons Drift bridge. Not too many problems with the locals. and running the gauntlet through Kranskop was not too difficicult at all, with only occasional variables to be considered.
The road to the old Tugela River Rafting camp was difficult to find with some changes to the routes having happened over time.
Tomorrow we explore the Jamiesons Drift - Eshowe Road where the Tugela meander does about an 8 km loop, the Gps showing a 300 metre…

Am sitting here at Amphitheatre Backpackers in the Northern Berg after spending three days helping this crazy Norwegian adventurer get all his ropes and gear to the top of the Tugela Falls for this incredible abseil. Rope length was 2 x 600m giving him a 1200m drop. Think he may just have broken some records in doing this. The comment afterwards was "Never again".
Struggled to get pics once he was over the edge but here is the one of Helge going "over the edge".…

We have been so busy these past two days that I have to upload some photos again. Aidan basically finished the roof, apart from one section where there are still a few poles missing (that we have to go get from the forestry first). Unfortunatley we have been hindered in our work again, this time not by rain but by wind ... ever tried to thatch a roof in a gale force wind? Not funny. Around 3 p.m. we had to abandon our posts and find other jobs to do, leaving the thatching for a less windy…
